TOP 5: Hidden Treasures on iflix

Sep 6, 2015

iflix-reviewIn case you don't know, Internet TV iflix is already available in the Philippines and i'm happy to say I haven't got any problems using it since it was introduced in the market. It's not just the accessibility, but the array of films and shows on their growing library that got me hooked that needed the attention it oh so deserves.

In this edition of TOP 5, we dish out some of the most underrated contents on iflix. Trust me, they're really worth adding in your weekend binge-watching:

5) Extras (BBC)

Ricky Gervais is already a well-established comedian thanks to his 'The Office' show (the one that was remade as a US show with Steve Carrell, remember?) and everyone loves that. But his follow-up show which is essentially a British-'Entourage' but for extras is a hilarious and realistic spin on the struggles of what it feels like being a walk-in star for a movie. The episodes featured different stars (with the likes of Ben Stiller, Kate Winslet, etc.) doing their thing.

4) Ang Huling Cha-Cha Ni Anita

What makes iflix stand now in the market is the addition of overlooked independent Filipino films being catered now. I only saw 'Ang Huling Cha-Cha Ni Anita' in Greenhills Teatrino during its very, very limited shows, that I was surprised to see the film added here. It's a love story that was too weird on paper, but turned out to be surprisingly wonderful onscreen. Watch out for child-wonder Teri Malvar's performance when you see it!

3) Louie

Get ready to play "Who laughs the most?" when you (and with friends, preferably) watch Louie, a show featuring stand-up comedy superstar Louis C.K. playing a fictionalized version of him. In case you have know idea of who this guy was (well, you should!), this show is a good appetizer for you to know what he is capable of. It's super funny.

2) Brilliante Mendoza's 'Serbis' and 'Kinatay'

For acclaimed director Brilliante Mendoza, provacative and daring is not an issue. His films shows the grittiest picture of reality the way we could've see it on reality. But his films, specifically 'Serbis' and 'Kinatay' might not be an easy viewing for everyone but boy they're f---in great! The two films got a shot to compete at the prestigious Cannes Films Festival, where the latter bags Mendoza a Best Director win. Both also featured a lesser-known Coco Martin, before he gets his shot as the biggest stars in the entertainment industry. All I can say is: "Bumalik ka na sa Indie, Coco!"

1) Fargo

Based on the critically-acclaimed Coen Brothers' film of the same name, 'Fargo' is already making its name as "one of the best recent television shows" and already for a second season next month. iflix is the very first in Asia to present the award-winning show which stars a fantastic ensemble that includes Billy Bob Thorton, Martin Freeman and Allison Tolman. The show concocts just the right amount of intensity, comedy and weird. Oh and the finale to Season 1 will disregard everything you expect of how it end, it might be something better.
