My Predictions for Oscars 2014

Jan 28, 2014
Airing live in the 2nd of March is the 86th Annual Academy Awards or famously known as 'The Oscars'. It's that glorious event of the year where movie lovers and filmmakers alike celebrate the same passion and art we all loved. A very tight year I must say, with '12 Years A Slave' alone competing great films like 'American Hustle' and 'The Wolf of Wall Street' for the coveted Best Picture award.

This is a yearly thing I usually do once the nominations had sprung over online, and I predict which films should and deserved to win at the year's Oscars. So, let's begin.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

  • Barkhad Abdi -- "Captain Phillips"
  • Bradley Cooper -- "American Hustle"
  • Jonah Hill -- "The Wolf of Wall Street"
  • Jared Leto -- "Dallas Buyers Club" - Perhaps Jared Leto's most daring performance yet, as a AIDS positive transgender woman, is a sure guarantee for the Award. It's not as cunning as Michael Fassbender nor funny as Jonah Hill, but Leto definitely delivers something worth remembering.
  • Michael Fassbender -- "12 Years a Slave"

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

  • Jennifer Lawrence -- "American Hustle" - Though I still love Lupita Nyong'o's very effective performance in "12 Years", my bet is still on Jennifer Lawrence. She steals every scene she's been in "American Hustle", and the most memorable performance in the movie.
  • Lupita Nyong'o -- "12 Years a Slave"
  • June Squibb -- "Nebraska"
  • Julia Roberts -- "August: Osage County"
  • Sally Hawkins -- "Blue Jasmine"

BEST ACTRESS

  • Amy Adams -- "American Hustle"
  • Cate Blanchett -- "Blue Jasmine" - I still haven't seen "Blue Jasmine" to be honest, but the praise through Blanchett's performance is crazy. Amy Adams, Meryl Streep and Sandra Bullock are all great in their respective films, but I could not pass on Blanchett's greatness that everyone has been raving as "the best performance in her career".
  • Judi Dench -- "Philomena"
  • Sandra Bullock -- "Gravity"
  • Meryl Streep -- "August: Osage County"

BEST ACTOR

  • Bruce Dern -- "Nebraska"
  • Chiwetel Ejiofor -- "12 Years a Slave"
  • Matthew McConaughey -- "Dallas Buyers Club"
  • Leonardo DiCaprio -- "The Wolf of Wall Street" - This is a tough one. McConaughey, Bale, DiCaprio, Dern, and Ejiofor in one category is hard to pick. I'm all for Leonardo DiCaprio since the very start. Why? Because he deserved at least a single Oscar for his career (Thanks Academy BTW for snubbing him last year in "Django"). And this might be the perfect year for him. His performance as Jordan Belfort was some of the best and funniest performance I have seen from the films all year.
  • Christian Bale -- "American Hustle"

BEST DIRECTOR

  • Steve McQueen -- "12 Years a Slave"
  • David O. Russell -- "American Hustle"
  • Alfonso Cuaron -- "Gravity" - Cuaron's amazing vision of an astronaut stranded in space was exhilarating. "Gravity" will obviously win the technical awards but Cuaron is everybody's favorite pick (including me) to bag the prize for Director.
  • Alexander Payne -- "Nebraska"
  • Martin Scorsese -- "The Wolf of Wall Street"
BEST PICTURE

  • "12 Years a Slave"
  • "The Wolf of Wall Street" - No matter how emotionally invested I am with "12 Years A Slave", blown away with the ending of "American Hustle", and made me transport into another layer of the universe of "Gravity", my heart still belongs to "The Wolf of Wall Street". Like I said earlier, I am sticking up to this movie no matter how tough the competition is. And might not be as important as the other films, this should pay the Academy for not making previous Scorsese classics ("Goodfellas", "Casino", "Taxi Driver" to name a few) win Best Picture. Either win or not, I will still not be disappointed with the result in this category since 2013 sure is a great year for movies.
  • "Captain Phillips"
  • "Her"
  • "American Hustle"
  • "Gravity"
  • "Dallas Buyers Club"
  • "Nebraska"
  • "Philomena"

BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

  • "American Hustle" -- David O. Russell and Eric Warren Singer
  • "Blue Jasmine" -- Woody Allen
  • "Her" -- Spike Jonze

BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

  • "12 Years a Slave" -- John Ridley
  • "Before Midnight" -- Julie Delpy, Ethan Hawke and Richard Linklater
  • "The Wolf of Wall Street" -- Terence Winter
  • "Captain Phillips" -- Billy Ray
  • "Philomena" -- Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE

  • "The Wind Rises" - Yup. I'm still mourning on Monsters University not getting nominated in this category (Thanks a lot "Despicable Me 2"). Anyways, i'm a big fan of Hayao Miyazaki's previous works like "Spirited Away" and "My Neighbor Totoro" so i'm definitely going for "The Wind Rises", which apparently is his last film.
